My SoCal Sports Wall of Fame, Updated!

My SoCal Sports Wall of Fame.

Even though the Los Angeles Times was one day late in publishing coverage for Game 5 of the World Series in its newspaper, that didn't stop me from adhering to a tradition started in mid-2000 (when Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant won their first NBA title with the Lakers) and displaying today's Dodgers-celebrating printed edition on my wall at home!

Yesterday, I woke up at 5:30 in the morning to buy the L.A. Times paper...with all but one store that I drove to (a donut shop in West Covina, versus 7-Elevens for the other visits I made around the cities of Diamond Bar and Pomona here in Los Angeles County) running out of Thursday's edition. To make things hilarious for those jerks who apparently bought multiple copies of the paper so that there wouldn't be any left for other customers to purchase yesterday, the L.A. Times had Game 5 coverage only on its website. Everyone had to wait till this morning to buy the commemorative paper celebrating Los Angeles' second Major League Baseball championship in five years.

I woke up at 5 AM today to ensure that would be a lot more papers left at that donut shop before I made my purchase. There were six in stock, and I bought two. (There were two papers remaining on the shelf yesterday.)

So while the Dodgers' 2024 championship coverage now graces my bedroom wall instead of the 2020 title, one wonders when I'll replace the newspapers celebrating the Lakers' 2020 NBA Finals victory and the Rams' 2022 Super Bowl win at home. The way that the Lakers and Rams are currently playing (the Lakers lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers—who are currently undefeated—two days ago, while the Rams are 3-4 in the NFC West right now), probably not anytime soon!

Go Dodger Blue.

RANT #2...

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa lies on the ground after suffering his third concussion in his NFL career...against the Buffalo Bills on September 12, 2024.

So my oldest sibling told me that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa may return to the field following his third NFL concussion (since 2022; this would be his fourth concussion since 2019, during his days on Alabama's Crimson Tide team) playing against the Buffalo Bills on September 12; ignoring the calls by lots of folks who want him to retire instead.

My sibling has Tua on his fantasy football team, and wants the Dolphins quarterback to return so Tagovailoa can "increase his team's points."

...

This is the latest thing that my sibling, who's 53, has said over the past 30 years to really piss me off. He's been unemployed since 2020 (and just resumed job-hunting earlier this year—having about four interviews since last February that obviously went nowhere due to his long gap in employment), and has nothing better to do than to work on his fantasy football team. And play golf in Palm Springs and other places...while my Dad, 77, wakes up around 5am in the morning three times a week to get ready for work.

Making History: Brightline West Breaks Ground on America's First High-Speed Rail Project Connecting Las Vegas to Southern California (Press Release - April 22)

Officials Hammer the First Spike Commemorating the Groundbreaking for Brightline West

LAS VEGAS – Today, Brightline West officially broke ground on the nation's first true high-speed rail system which will connect Las Vegas to Southern California. The 218-mile system will be constructed in the middle of the I-15 and is based on Brightline’s vision to connect city pairs that are too short to fly and too far to drive.

Hailed as the greenest form of transportation in the world, Brightline West will run zero-emission, fully-electric trains capable of speeds of 200 miles per hour. Brightline West is a watershed project for high-speed rail in America and will establish the foundation for the creation of a new industry and supply chain.

The project was recently awarded $3 billion in funding from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill. The rest of the project will be privately funded and has received a total allocation of $3.5 billion in private activity bonds from USDOT.

The groundbreaking included remarks from U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, Brightline Founder Wes Edens, Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, Sen. Jacky Rosen, Senior Advisor to President Biden Steve Benjamin and Vince Saavedra of the Southern Nevada Building Trades. In addition, Nevada Reps. Dina Titus, Susie Lee and Steve Horsford and California Reps. Pete Aguilar and Norma Torres made remarks and joined the celebration.

More than 600 people, including union representatives, project supporters and other state and local officials from California and Nevada, attended the event.

“People have been dreaming of high-speed rail in America for decades – and now, with billions of dollars of support made possible by President Biden’s historic infrastructure law, it’s finally happening,” said Secretary Buttigieg. “Partnering with state leaders and Brightline West, we’re writing a new chapter in our country’s transportation story that includes thousands of union jobs, new connections to better economic opportunity, less congestion on the roads, and less pollution in the air.”

“This is a historic project and a proud moment where we break ground on America’s first high-speed rail system and lay the foundation for a new industry,” said Wes Edens, Brightline founder. “Today is long overdue, but the blueprint we’ve created with Brightline will allow us to repeat this model in other city pairs around the country.”

Construction of Brightline West

Brightline West's rail system will span 218 miles and reach speeds of 200 mph. The route, which has full environmental clearance, will run within the median of the I-15 highway with zero grade crossings.

The system will have stops in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as Victor Valley, Hesperia and Rancho Cucamonga, California.

The privately-led infrastructure project is one of the largest in the nation and will be constructed and operated by union labor. It will use 700,000 concrete rail ties, 2.2 million tons of ballast, and 63,000 tons of 100% American steel rail during construction.

Upon completion, Brightline West will include 322 miles of overhead lines to power the trains and will include 3.4 million square feet of retaining walls. The project covers more than 160 structures including viaducts and bridges.

Brightline West will be fully Buy America Compliant.

Stations and Facilities

Brightline West will connect Southern California and Las Vegas in two hours or almost half the time as driving. The Las Vegas Station will be located near the iconic Las Vegas Strip, on a 110-acre property north of Blue Diamond Road between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard.

The station provides convenient access to the Harry Reid International Airport, the Las Vegas Convention Center and the Raiders’ Allegiant Stadium. The station is approximately 80,000 square-feet plus parking.

The Victor Valley Station in Apple Valley will be located on a 300-acre parcel southeast of Dale Evans Parkway and the I-15 interchange. The station is intended to offer a future connection to the High Desert Corridor and California High Speed Rail.

The Victor Valley Station is approximately 20,000 square-feet plus parking.

The Rancho Cucamonga Station will be located on a 5-acre property at the northwest corner of Milliken Avenue and Azusa Court near Ontario International Airport. The station will be co-located with existing multi-modal transportation options including California Metrolink, for seamless connectivity to Downtown Los Angeles and other locations in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.

The Rancho Cucamonga Station is approximately 80,000 square-feet plus parking.

The Hesperia Station will be located within the I-15 median at the I-15/Joshua Street interchange and will function primarily as a local rail service for residents in the High Desert on select southbound morning and northbound evening weekday trains.

The Vehicle Maintenance Facility (VMF) is a 200,000-square-foot building located on 238 acres in Sloan, Nevada, and will be the base for daily maintenance and staging of trains. This site will also serve as one of two hubs for the maintenance of way operations and the operations control center.

More than 100 permanent employees will report on a daily basis once operations begin and will serve as train crews, corridor maintenance crews or operations control center teammates. A second maintenance of way facility will be located adjacent to the Apple Valley station.

Market

The Las Vegas and Southern California travel market is one of the nation’s most attractive corridors with over 50 million trips between the region each year. Additionally, Las Vegas continues to attract visitors from around the world, with 4.7 million international travelers flying into the destination.

The city dubs itself on being the world’s No. 1 meeting destination, welcoming nearly 6 million people to the Las Vegas Convention Center last year.

In California, approximately 17 million Southern California residents are within 25 miles of the Brightline West station sites. Studies show that one out of every three visits to Las Vegas come from Southern California.

Economic & Environmental Benefits

Brightline West's $12 billion infrastructure investment will create over $10 billion in economic impact for Nevada and California and will generate more than 35,000 jobs, including 10,000 direct union construction roles and 1,000 permanent operations and maintenance positions. The investment also includes over $800 million in improvements to the I-15 corridor and involves agreements with several unions for skilled labor.

The project supports Nevada and California's climate goals by offering a no-emission mobility option that reduces greenhouse gasses by over 400,000 tons of CO2 annually – reducing vehicle miles traveled by more than 700 million each year and the equivalent of 16,000 short-haul flights. The company will also construct three wildlife overpasses, in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Caltrans for the safe passage of native species, primarily the bighorn sheep.

The Chiefs Are the Champions...

The Kansas City Chiefs are back-to-back Super Bowl champions after defeating the San Francisco 49ers, 25-22, in overtime at Las Vegas' Allegiant Stadium...on February 11, 2024.

Congratulations to Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs for winning Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas tonight! I wanted the Detroit Lions (led by former L.A. Rams quarterback Jared Goff) to reach the Big Game this year, but since they lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship, I decided to root for Mahomes to earn his third championship ring since 2020 instead.

I hope the Rams regain their status as a serious title contender next season... It would be epic (and nerve-racking) to see them go up against the Chiefs in 2025's Super Bowl LIX! Carry on.

Photos of the Day #3: The Rams' Super Bowl LVI Championship Parade and Rally!

Outside linebacker Leonard Floyd hoists up the Vince Lombardi Trophy during the Los Angeles Rams' Super Bowl LVI championship parade...on February 16, 2022.

After spending almost two hours looking for parking (I spent $25 when I finally found a parking spot), I walked several blocks down to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to attend the Rams' Super Bowl LVI championship parade and rally today!

The parade began at 11 AM, while the rally occurred at the Olympic Plaza near the Coliseum Peristyle at 12 PM...both times in Pacific Standard.

As shown in these photos (the majority of them taken with my Nikon D3300 DSLR camera), it was Rams linebacker Leonard Floyd who held the Vince Lombardi Trophy while the buses slowly strolled down South Figueroa Street next to the Coliseum. Quarterback Matthew Stafford, Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp and defensive tackle Aaron Donald were also spotted on the same bus that Floyd was on.

I didn't spot head coach Sean McVay, linebacker Von Miller or other Rams personnel till they gave their speeches at the rally afterwards. (I was too busy getting as many snapshots of the Lombardi Trophy on the bus as possible.)

It's amazing that I went to all five Lakers parades from 2000 to 2010, both Kings Stanley Cup parades in 2012 and 2014, and now a Super Bowl celebration in the City of Angels!

Here's hoping that the Major League Baseball lockout ends as soon as possible; the Dodgers need to win again and earn the parade they were denied two years ago. And the onus is now on the Chargers to bring another Super Bowl title to Los Angeles as well...

Screw the Clippers. Happy Wednesday!

Photo of the Day #2: Gettin' My Championship Gear Ready for the Rams' Parade...

Posing with the Los Angeles Rams' NFC championship baseball cap after I bought it at a local Kohl's department store...on February 15, 2022.

Earlier today, I bought this Los Angeles Rams baseball cap from a local Kohl's department store. This purchase was unplanned—as I went to Kohl's just to walk around and burn off calories from the hamburger combo I bought for lunch at a nearby In-N-Out food joint about half an hour earlier.

Seeing as how I'm not supposed to get my official Super Bowl championship cap (which I ordered online shortly after the Rams defeated the Cincinnati Bengals two days ago) in the mail till March 1, I figured that I'd buy this alternate cap...which celebrates the Rams' National Football Conference championship victory against the San Francisco 49ers last month.

Can't wait to wear this cap at the Rams' parade and rally—which will be held near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum tomorrow! The parade will start near the Shrine Auditorium a few blocks away at 11 AM, and end at the Coliseum shortly before 12 noon.

The championship rally will then begin near Olympic Plaza next to the Coliseum Peristyle at noon and last till 1 PM... All times in Pacific Standard, of course.

Can't wait!

Photos of the Day: My SoCal Sports Wall of Fame, Updated!

My SoCal Sports Wall of Fame.

Just thought I'd share this image of my updated SoCal Sports Wall of Fame...which now bears the Los Angeles Times' front page section featuring a triumphant photo of the L.A. Rams' Super Bowl victory over the Cincinnati Bengals yesterday.

As you can see, my wall now holds L.A. Times newspapers that celebrate the championships of teams in three different sports leagues: The Lakers and Dodgers in 2020, and now the Rams. I'd also include newspapers that covered the Stanley Cup wins by the L.A. Kings in 2012 and 2014, respectively, but I figured I only have space on this part of my wall to mark the victories of professional Southern California sports teams in this decade.

(Even though 2020 was the end of last decade, but you get the idea.)

Will the L.A. Chargers win the Super Bowl next year? Or maybe this season's NBA championship will belong to the Clippers... Pfft, yea right. Even if the Lakers' obnoxious little brothers somehow make it to the NBA Finals this June, I have no intention of immortalizing them on a load-bearing wall at home.

Happy Valentine's Day.

Today's Los Angeles Times newspaper before it was displayed on my wall.

THANK YOU, RAMS... Los Angeles is the City of Champions for the Third Time in Three Years!

The Los Angeles Rams became the new Super Bowl champions after defeating the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California...on February 13, 2022.

Congratulations to the Los Angeles Rams for besting the Cincinnati Bengals, 23-20, during an intense game in Super Bowl LVI! This comes less than two years after the Los Angeles Lakers and Dodgers won an NBA championship and World Series title, respectively.

Despite a knee injury to their star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.—who had to sit out the rest of the game after sustaining a torn ACL in the second quarter—the Rams were able to regroup and play tough defense till the very end of the second half...preventing the Bengals from either making a game-winning touchdown or at least bringing the game to overtime.

This is the second consecutive year where the home team won the NFL championship on their home field (Tom Brady and the Buccaneers won a title at Tampa Bay's Raymond James Stadium in 2021), and the first time the Super Bowl was played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O'Neal were able to win their first NBA championship at STAPLES Center in the first year the Los Angeles arena opened (back in 1999), while the Rams accomplished this feat in the second year that SoFi took its place as the largest NFL stadium in the country. Well done!

It remains to be seen if there will be a victory parade this week...and if there is, I'll definitely be there! Donning an N95 mask, of course.

One last thing: Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg reminded us why they're still the GOATs of hip-hop during tonight's Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. That is all!

All the teams that the Los Angeles Rams defeated in the 2021 NFL postseason to become Super Bowl champions.

IT'S OFFICIAL: Tom Brady Is Finally Ending a Mediocre NFL Career Where He Only Collected 7 Championship Rings...

Tom Brady officially retired on February 1, 2022...after spending an uneventful 22 years in the National Football League.

Gotta hand it to the Los Angeles Rams for making this underachieving quarterback finally call it quits after 22 years of stinkin' up the joint in the NFL... One of the biggest disappointments in the history of football!

Also:

I still watch reruns of THE BIG BANG THEORY on TV.

The Rams Are Returning to the Super Bowl!

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the San Francisco 49ers, 20-17, in the National Football Conference championship game on January 30, 2022...giving the Rams a berth in Super Bowl 56 next month.

Three years after falling short to Tom Brady and the New England Cheatriots in Super Bowl LIII, the Los Angeles Rams have a chance to redeem themselves when they utilize their home field advantage at Inglewood's SoFi Stadium to take on the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI...scheduled for February 13!

Replacing Jared Goff as Los Angeles' quarterback is Matthew Stafford—who'll hopefully shine under pressure in the Big Game the same way the Rams' defense did (but Goff didn't) back in 2019. In a season where the L.A. Dodgers were dethroned by the Atlanta Braves as World Series champions last autumn, and the Lakers suck so friggin' hard this year due to the incompetence of Russell Westbrook and the constant injuries of Anthony Davis and LeBron James, the City of Angels definitely needs a badly-needed victory as the world approaches a full two years of the COVID-19 pandemic this March.

I don't wanna jinx matters by talking about a championship parade, but yea, I'll be sure to wear a brand-new N95 mask if Inglewood hosts a celebration should Rams Nation prevail at SoFi Stadium the day before Valentine's Day... That is all.

Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams will take on Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals at Inglewood's SoFi Stadium in Super Bowl 56...on February 13, 2022.

Kobe's Legacy Lives On Even in the Bucks' Newest NBA Championship...

Kobe Bryant greets the Milwaukee Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo during an NBA game.

Congratulations to the Milwaukee Bucks for defeating the Phoenix Suns tonight and winning their first NBA championship in 50 years! I was actually rooting for the Suns (since they beat the L.A. Clippers, who I despise as a Lakers fan), but the Bucks' latest title should resonate with folks who still miss Kobe Bryant one-and-a-half years after he passed away. In 2017, Kobe challenged the Bucks' Giannis Antetokounmpo to win the NBA's Most Valuable Player award...which he did in 2019 and last year, respectively. Making Kobe's challenge all the more significant is the fact that Antetokounmpo now has a Finals MVP trophy in his collection. The Mamba's legacy continues to live on—even with those who don't play for the Lakers.

On a related note, will the Lakers join the Bucks during their eventual visit to the White House? The L.A. Dodgers celebrated their 2020 World Series title with President Biden and Vice President Harris about three weeks ago, while the Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers dropped by the White House earlier today. COVID-19 protocols stopped LeBron James, Anthony Davis and company from meeting Biden and Harris after they took office... It would be great if the Lake Show was given a second opportunity to hand customized jerseys to the two most powerful people in the world as well. We'll see.

The Cheatriots Prevail Again...

Tom Brady won his sixth championship ring after the New England Cheatriots defeated the L.A. Rams, 13-3, in Super Bowl 53...on February 3, 2019.

Two straight World Series losses by the Dodgers and now the Super Bowl (and the Lakers potentially missing the playoffs due to LeBron James' groin injury)... Keep tauntin' Los Angeles and kissin' Boston's ass, sports gods.

If there's a silver lining to tonight's disappointing loss, it's that the Rams are one of three teams to have faced the New England Cheatriots (yes, I know that isn't their real name) twice in the Big Game since 2001...which is the year Tom Brady won his first NFL title, against the St. Louis Rams. (The other two teams being the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.) The Rams can do it a third time in Super Bowl LIV next year—assuming, of course, Jared Goff improves his game dramatically or the Rams actually get a new quarterback. We'll see what happens.

PS: Screw you, Cheatriots.

Thanks, Jared Goff.

The Rams Are Going to the Super Bowl!!!

The Los Angeles Rams are headed to Super Bowl 53...which will be held in Atlanta, Georgia, on February 3, 2019.

Referees, schmeferees— It's not like L.A. running back Todd Gurley had the football deflated or something... Anyways, congrats to the Los Angeles Rams for defeating the New Orleans Saints, 26-23, in the National Football Conference championship game today! Now bring on the Kansas City Chiefs or the New England Cheatriots (in case you're wondering why I made that 'deflated football' comment) on February 3rd...

Here's hoping that unlike a certain Los Angeles baseball team who could've brought home the trophy two years in a row, the Rams will actually win the championship in Super Bowl LIII instead of merely being happy playing for it. Carry on!

EDIT (7:29 PM, PST): F**k the Cheatriots!

The Los Angeles Rams will take on the New England Cheatriots in Super Bowl 53 at Atlanta, Georgia...on February 3, 2019.

Dodgers, Dodgers, Dodgers...

If Los Angeles officially gets eliminated by the Boston Red Sox tomorrow night, only to return to the World Series next year, they'll most likely be the baseball equivalent of the NFL's Buffalo Bills. Or the NBA's Utah Jazz. Or the New Jersey Nets. Or the Oklahoma City Thunder. Or...

Good job, Dave Roberts. What is it with the Dodgers making absolutely terrible decisions regarding the pitching staff for the 2017 and 2018 World Series? First, Yu Darvish starts in Game 7 last year—to disastrous consequences—and now Rich Hill is replaced in the 7th inning tonight to equally disastrous consequences (L.A. had a 4-0 lead going into the 7th inning, only to finish the game losing 9-6)... Totally lame.

Come tomorrow night, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts should be the MVP for his former team/soon-to-be 2018 World Series champions: the Boston Red Sox.

MEETING THE MAMBA!

My autographed copy of Kobe Bryant's new book, THE MAMBA MENTALITY.

As alluded to in this previous entry about my meet and greet with the delightful Ellie Kemper from The Office two weeks ago, I went to Barnes & Noble bookstore at The Grove in Los Angeles yesterday to meet none other than Kobe Bryant! Actually, I met Kobe over 11 years ago...during a charity basketball game he hosted in Hollywood where I shook his hand, but didn't get a picture or autograph by him. That all changed last night, when not only did I buy a pre-signed copy of his book The Mamba Mentality (for less than $30), but I took a photo with the 5-time NBA champ as well! So dope. With the exception of Robert Horry, I have met the majority of players from the Lakers championship teams of 2000 to 2002. Kobe... Shaq... Derek Fisher... Rick Fox... Tyronn Lue.. Devean George... Greg Foster... And even A.C. Green. I think Horry did an autograph signing at my local mall last year, but I passed it up. I'll make sure not to do so the next time an opportunity to meet Will Smith's basketball doppelgänger comes around!

So which sports icons do I wanna meet next? Michael Jordan, if he ever decides to do a signing in Southern California. 2-time Super Bowl champion Peyton Manning (if he does a meet and greet in SoCal as well). Pau Gasol, who I'm sure will make some kind of public appearance once he permanently hangs up that San Antonio Spurs jersey in a few years. And of course, LeBron James! Just like Kobe, though, James most likely won't write a book till he leaves the NBA as well—but not before he wins his first regular season game with the Lakers. 0-3... C'mon now, Lake Show!

The Philadelphia Eagles Are The New Super Bowl Champs!

Nick Foles hoists the Vince Lombardi Trophy after his Philadelphia Eagles defeat the New England Patriots, 41-33, in Super Bowl 52...on February 4, 2018.
Philadelphia Eagles / Kiel Leggere

Congrats to the Philadelphia Eagles for winning their first-ever Super Bowl championship by defeating the New England Patriots, 41-33 in Minneapolis today! Unlike the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI last year, Eagles quarterback/Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles and his team were able to gain the lead early (relinquishing it only once) and keep the momentum going during the whole game, allowing them to best Tom Brady and company during Super Bowl LII this evening! Speaking of Brady... Just like Kobe Bryant before his career ended less than two years ago, Brady was denied a 6th championship ring—at least in this now-concluded NFL season. But unlike Michael Jordan, his Chicago Bulls and their 6 NBA trophies, I was definitely not rooting for Brady to reach that rarefied plateau tonight. Michael Jordan pushing off Bryon Russell in the final moments of Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals isn't as shady as 2015's Deflategate. Or maybe it is...but I just despise New England so much that I'm more biased against this team. Oh well.

Fly Eagles fly!

The Los Doyers Are Goin' Back to the World Series...

The Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate after defeating the Chicago Cubs, 11-1, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series (NLCS)...on October 19, 2017.
Getty Images

29 years after winning their last championship at the expense of the Oakland A's, the Los Angeles Dodgers are headed back to the Fall Classic after laying a smackdown on the Chicago Cubs, 11-1, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series at Wrigley Field tonight. Game 1 of the World Series takes place at Dodger Stadium next Tuesday, October 24, against the winner of the American League Championship Series. So by either tomorrow night or Saturday evening, the Los Doyers will be prepping to play the Houston Astros or the New York Yankees in the final round. Chances are, the head honchos at Major League Baseball's main office are hoping it's the latter. Gotta make that dough and the high TV ratings, ya know...

I'm an Angels fan, but being a proud California native who's attended every Lakers parade since 2000 and both parades for the L.A. Kings in 2012 and 2014, respectively, I'll root for any team that continues to make SoCal—and Los Angeles in general—the championship capital of this nation. Keep in mind that the Los Angeles Sparks were so close to winning a WNBA title against the Minnesota Lynx a little over two weeks ago (the Lynx clinched the championship in Game 5 of the WNBA Finals...which took place on my birthday, October 4).

Assuming that the Dodgers win it all by November 1st (which is when a Game 7 would be played—in Los Angeles), the Clippers will be the only team in the City of Angels to not win a championship since the start of this century (the Rams and the Chargers are excluded...for now). I'll wait till the outcome of the World Series to pour haterade on the only title-less team to currently play inside STAPLES Center in downtown Los Angeles. That is all.

Images of the Day: The 2028 Summer Olympic Games Are Officially Coming to Los Angeles!

The official logo for the 2028 Summer Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

A few hours ago, the International Olympic Committee officially announced in Lima, Peru that the 2028 Summer Olympic Games (a.k.a. the Games of the 34th Olympiad) will be heading to Los Angeles...while the 2024 Games (which mark the 33rd Olympiad) will be hosted in Paris. L.A. originally intended to bring the Games back to American soil in '24, but ultimately deferred to the French capital. The 2024 Olympics will mark 100 years since the multi-sporting event was last played in France (the 1924 Games were the 8th Olympiad), while the 2028 Olympics will take place 32 years after the 1996 Olympic Games (the 26th Olympiad) in Atlanta—the last U.S. city to host this event.

On a different note, the 2028 Games will also mark 20 years since swimming legend Michael Phelps started his quest to becoming the greatest Olympian of all-time by winning 8 gold medals during the 2008 Games (the 29th Olympiad) in Beijing. Oh, and Kobe Bryant helped LeBron James lead the U.S. men's basketball team to a gold medal that same year after the Kobe-less team earned a "measly" bronze medal during the 2004 Olympics (the 28th Olympiad) in Greece. It's obviously too early to say, but we'll see how the Dream Team plays 11 years from now...since LeBron will no doubt join Kobe as retired NBA legends by then.

Anyways, I can't wait for the Summer Olympics to return to the City of Angels! Here are some art concepts depicting proposed sporting venues throughout SoCal for the 2028 Games...courtesy of the LA2028 Facebook page. Happy Hump Day.

Looks Like the Summer of 2010 Can Now Be Forgotten...

The Cleveland Cavaliers pose for a team photo after defeating the Golden State Warriors, 93-89, in Game 7 to win the NBA Finals...on June 19, 2016.
NBA

Much props to LeBron James for making history by leading the Cleveland Cavaliers to their first franchise championship tonight. Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors' 73-9 regular season was officially rendered moot as the Cavs became the first NBA team to come back from a 3-1 series deficit to win the Finals. But I'm pretty sure the majority of you reading this watched Game 7, so there's no point in bringing up stats that you already know. LeBron should stand proud... He made up for the debacle that was 2010's The Decision.

Rumor has it that LeBron might possibly go to the Lakers or back to Miami now that he won a major sports title for Cleveland, which hasn't gotten one for 52 years (the last championship being by the Cleveland Browns in 1964...two years before the Super Bowl was created by the NFL). All I can say is, King James going to the Lake Show will make up for (sort of) his boss Dan Gilbert fucking things up for Kobe when the Black Mamba lost his chance to win a 6th ring after Chris Paul's trade to the Lakers was blocked in 2011...courtesy of Gilbert writing a letter to then-NBA commissioner David Stern and having him nix the deal. Bastards. Carry on.

The 1995-'96 Chicago Bulls is still the greatest team in NBA history.

Super Bowl 50...

Peyton Manning hoists the Vince Lombardi Trophy after his Denver Broncos defeat the Carolina Panthers, 24-10, in Super Bowl 50...on February 7, 2016.
Doug Mills / The New York Times

Congrats to Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos for winning the Big Game, 24-10, at Levi's Stadium today! Word has it that this may be Manning's last rodeo before riding off into the sunset after having an illustrious NFL career that now includes two Super Bowl titles. If Manning is thinking about retiring, all I can say is...do it! Like his predecessor John Elway, who won two straight NFL championships in 1998 and '99 before calling it quits as the Broncos' main quarterback, Manning should take advantage of the fact that this can be a fairy tale ending (sorry for the cliché) for him after playing a season that was fraught with injuries to the 39-year-old player. That, and the fact that it would be quite unfortunate if he made it to another Super Bowl, only to be blown out like what happened against the Seattle Seahawks in 2014 (the Broncos got routed by Pete Carroll's team in Super Bowl XLVIII, 43-8).

Another reason why Manning should hang up his cleats: He should avoid Kobe Bryant's present situation. (Supposedly, Manning and Bryant are good pals.) Kobe is about two months away from ending an NBA career that resulted in 5 championships and numerous All-Star Game appearances with the L.A. Lakers. Unfortunately, the Black Mamba is doing so while playing on what is without a doubt one of the worst squads in Laker team history. Kobe will be hanging up his jersey without playing another NBA postseason game ever again. He's ending his career like how Michael Jordan did when he left the Washington Wizards and retired for good in 2004 (the Wizards failed to make the playoffs in the two seasons that MJ was on this team), not how Jordan retired from the Chicago Bulls after making that game-winning shot (we'll overlook that push-off against Bryon Russell) against the Utah Jazz in Game 6 of the 1998 NBA Finals. The gist of this post: Manning needs to end his career as a winner...not as a phenomenal athlete who played for one too many years and was forced to leave because age and injuries dictated it (cough-Brett Favre-cough). That is all.
