On This Day in 1993: Agents Mulder and Scully Begin Searching for the Truth That's Out There...

THE X-FILES made its debut on television 30 years ago...on September 10, 1993.

It was 30 years ago today that The X-Files made its debut on television! I was just starting 8th grade when the sci-fi mystery drama by Chris Carter (a fellow alumnus at my college, Cal State Long Beach) began airing on FOX TV, and was about to complete my fourth year in college when the original 9-season run of The X-Files ended on May 19, 2002.

I watched the first X-Files movie that was shown in theaters back in 1998, but never saw the sequel, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, in 2008. (Based on the Rotten Tomatoes reviews for this film, I didn't miss out on anything!)

And of course, I watched FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny, who I saw on set when I worked as a background actor on an episode of his SHOWTIME series Californication in Culver City 10 years ago) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) make their return to television for Seasons 10 and 11 of The X-Files between January 2016 and March 2018, respectively.

The X-Files inspired other sci-fi and paranormal TV shows like Fringe and Supernatural over the last two decades—with Supernatural itself employing the monster-of-the-week and mythology episode format during its 15-season run, just like what the Chris Carter series did.

The 1996 hit alien invasion flick Independence Day also paid its respects to The X-Files...though Chris Carter's homage to that summer blockbuster with the '98 X-Files movie (where in one scene, Mulder is seen outside a bar urinating on the poster for Independence Day that's hanging to the side of the building) isn't exactly something that ID4 filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin would find flattering!

The X-Files will always be one of my favorite television programs...along with shows like 24, Prison Break, Supernatural and The Big Bang Theory (which of course, isn't a serialized drama).

Would I watch Season 12 of The X-Files if FOX ever decided to give this trailblazing series one more year? You betcha!

And as a reminder: The truth is out there. Happy Sunday!

LA to Vegas...

The cast of FOX TV's LA TO VEGAS.

So what's the word on this show's chances of being renewed for a second season? I watched the season (hopefully not series) finale of LA to Vegas yesterday, and needless to say, I wanna see more wacky exploits by these Jackpot Airline (no, it's not a real airline) employees. It's hilarious to see Peter Stormare (of Armageddon, Prison Break and John Wick 2 fame) once again sporting a Russian accent but not being a homicidal criminal on this sitcom. And ditto with Dylan McDermott—who went from being a traitorous former Secret Service agent in the 2013 film Olympus Has Fallen to playing Jackpot Airlines' goofy pilot Captain Dave. Olivia Macklin is Nichole...a beautiful Vegas stripper with a heart of gold (like Vivica A. Fox in 1996's Independence Day), while Kim Matula and Nathan Lee Graham portray Ronnie and Bernard, the crazy duo who keep life aboard their Jackpot airliner from descending into chaos during the flights from Los Angeles to Las Vegas, and vice versa. And to round out the cast: Amir Talai plays Captain Dave's bumbling co-pilot Alan, and Ed Weeks portrays Colin; a divorced father of one who should finally get things goin' with Ronnie if LA to Vegas sees another season.

So yea, while LA to Vegas has ways to go before it replaces The Big Bang Theory as my all-time favorite sitcom (unless TBBT does end after Season 12 as rumored), it's a hilarious TV show that I try not to miss on Tuesday nights. I might also be biased here; I worked as a background actor on the show at Fox Studios last fall! You can see me as the blur wearing a dark-gray short-sleeved shirt and jeans (and carrying that large black bag) in the screenshots below. They're from episode 1.5: The Fellowship of the Bear, which aired on February 6. Anyways, did I mention that Nichole is so beautiful? Just thought I'd say it again. Happy Hump Day.

You can see me as a blur (near the left edge of the frame) in this screenshot from LA TO VEGAS: Episode 1.5 - 'The Fellowship of the Bear.'

You can also see me as a blur (near the left edge of the frame, again) in this screenshot from LA TO VEGAS: Episode 1.5 - 'The Fellowship of the Bear.'

The main cast of THE FOLLOWING.

The Following... Such an awesome TV show. It looks like FOX finally found a worthy replacement for 24 (which ended in 2010) with this new drama—which focuses on a formerly-retired FBI agent (Ryan Hardy, played by Kevin Bacon) who goes after a group of cult members that an imprisoned serial killer (Joe Carroll, played by James Purefoy) unleashes on the public as a way of getting revenge on the agent, who arrested the killer and once slept with his wife. Just like Kiefer Sutherland as 24's Jack Bauer, Bacon is a bad-ass as Hardy. Case-in-point: For those of you who saw yesterday's episode ("The Fall"), Hardy would've totally pwned (to borrow Internet message board parlance) those three cult members had the girl (Emma Hill, played by Valorie Curry) not been equipped with that stun gun...courtesy of Joe Carroll. Of course, Hardy does pwn—okay, own—two of the lackeys once he frees his hands of that rope. Like the terrorists in 24, the bad guys in The Following are so intensely sinister that one can't help but wait for Hardy to show up on scene and end their murderous rampage with a bullet to the chest. However, Carroll is so resourceful that Hardy is not just going up against average Joes and plain Janes who are carrying out the author-turned-killer's bidding...but police officers, former soldiers and SWAT team members who'll be ready to strike once they get the word from Carroll (through coded televised messages via Carroll's hapless lawyer).

Valorie Curry and Nico Tortorella play two cult followers in THE FOLLOWING.

If there's one gripe I have about The Following, it's the numerous flashback scenes in each episode. I understand that they're needed to show the relationship between Hardy and Carroll before they became mortal enemies, and to explain the events that led people like Emma to want to fall under Carroll's stewardship. But the main highlight of each episode is when Hardy appears on scene—ready to hand out justice to these homicidal followers. Considering the high-concept premise of this show, one wonders if The Following will get at least a second season and at most a fourth (just like Prison Break) on FOX. Of course, how many people thought that Jack Bauer would endure 8 separate days (as in 8 seasons) saving the world within each of those 24 hours? Just like Bauer, don't underestimate Agent Hardy. And definitely don't underestimate Joe Carroll. Looking forward to next Monday's episode.

(PS: And no, I wasn't paid to blog about this show. Would've been cool if I was, though. Hah.)

Wearing an Edgar Allan Poe mask, a cult follower puts on a show before wreaking murderous havoc in THE FOLLOWING.

THE FINAL BREAK... I bought the DVD yesterday, and after I finished watching the movie, all I have to say is: So it WASN'T the nosebleed that did him in? Interesting. Rest in peace, Michael Scofield.

If you thought that offering my condolences for a fictional TV character is odd, wait till Jack Bauer checks out. Assuming he ever does. Will have to wait for Day 8 of 24 to premiere next January to find out...

PRISON BREAK: THE FINAL BREAK.

Friday, May 15, 2009

PRISON BREAK... So tonight was the 2-hour series finale of the hit TV show on FOX, and I must say... Rest In Peace, Michael Scofield... It was cool knowing ya. The way the series ended was done pretty well. Not only do we see the return of vital characters from Seasons’ 1 and 2 (C-Note and Agent Kellerman) today, we see that they play an important factor in gaining the freedom for all the characters who were seeking it since episode 1 of the first season. C-Note is the one who eliminates the hitmen who have been carrying out the evil bidding of General Krantz (That shot of him on the electric chair was— Wow. Didn’t know that a fate so deserving would still be surprising to see when it was played out) and the Company during most of Season 4, and Agent Kellerman—who ironically tried to make sure that Lincoln Burrows and Scofield either stayed in prison or died the minute they stepped out of the gates of Fox River Penitentiary—was the one who would eventually be in the position to have the brothers and everyone else exonerated at the end. And Christina Scofield was right: She IS the worst mom, ever.

Fernando Sucre... That’s what I call a true friend. As cheesy as that sounds. Too bad they didn’t show Sucre’s hot-ass girlfriend Maricruz in the finale though. So Don Self is a vegetable now, huh? And what happened to Gretchen?? And Lincoln’s son LJ? Anyways... That final scene showing Sara, her son, Burrows, Sucre and Alex Mahone visiting Scofield’s grave definitely brought closure to Prison Break (I know, I know... Ya think?). Even though it truly sucks that Scofield didn’t make it at the end, his fate exemplified all the sacrifice that he gave since he entered Fox River to free his brother 4 years ago. Michael Scofield died so that his family and friends may live.

Oh, and welcome back to prison, T-Bag. It looks like you’re still da man there.

UPDATE (May 16): In terms of nitpicking, there was a continuity error towards the end of the second episode last night. When Scofield gets shot by his mom, he gets hit on the left shoulder. But in the scene afterwards, when he is meeting up with Agent Kellerman to hand over Scylla, Scofield is putting a hand over his right shoulder. I wonder how the editors could have missed this? Oh well.

UPDATE #2 (May 16): Speaking of Kellerman, it's kinda interesting that he became a congressman. But how does he explain the deaths of those officers who were transporting him to prison when those masked gunmen freed him towards the end of Season 2? Did Kellerman rat those gunmen out before he ran for office? Hm.

PRISON BREAK is callin' it quits this April.

FAREWELL, PRISON BREAK... After four seasons filled with tons of gripping suspense and intriguing (but farfetched, I know) storylines, the FOX TV serial drama is finally coming to an end. On April 17, Prison Break will return for four more episodes (and possibly a few more), and then given the curtain. It will take over the Friday 8 PM slot after Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles wraps up its second (and final?) season a week before.

Well, at least Prison Break is ending on a high note. As stated in a previous entry, this season is probably the most interesting and creative one since the first season. It was good knowing ya, Mike and Linc. Do you think Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell will finally get his comeuppance in the series finale? We'll see.

Monday, November 24, 2008

PRISON BREAK... Shannon— Noooooooooo! Those of you who’ve been watching this fourth season of the FOX TV drama (which, in my opinion, has been a pretty awesome season so far. Maybe even a tad better than Season 1) will have obviously watched Michael Rapaport’s character, Don Self, reveal his true self (pun unintended) at the end of today's episode and kill fellow FBI agent Trishanne—not her real name...just an alias as she kept tabs on Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell at the Gates corporation—after Self retrieved Scylla from Michael Scofield and the gang. Her acting after she got shot in the chest may not exactly be Emmy-worthy, but man, did Shannon Lucio play one hot Fed when she was alive. Farewell, Trishanne. May your totally sexy soul find peace and prosperity in heaven. I know. That sounded lame.

Trishanne was ONE fiiinez FBI agent...

About the non-titular parts of Prison Break... Is it just me but the last 10 minutes of today’s episode was one of the most suspenseful moments of the entire season—let alone the entire series? Not because Michael Scofield and the gang were in any danger...but the fact nothing was happening and it actually looked like things were finally gonna end on a fine and dandy note for them? C’mon, that’s not the Prison Break way (especially since there's still, what, 12 more episodes left for this season?). There’s always something interesting and suspenseful, even if it’s sometimes a bit farfetched as well, happening on the show. Don Self showing what a rat bastard he is... Now THAT’S the Prison Break way. Looking forward to next week. Even if Trishanne will no longer be around for us to stare at her ti— Nevermind.

RIP, Trishanne. Cot Damn.

Wednesday, September 24, 2008

PRISON BREAK... Those of you who have been watching season 4 (which has been going well) so far will have probably noticed the sexy receptionist who works at the Gates corporation where Theodore "T-Bag" Bagwell (Robert Knepper) is posing as a salesman. That would be Trishanne, who is played by Shannon Lucio...best known (if you watched the show, which I didn’t. Had to look this info up on IMDb.com) as Lindsay Gardner in the now-defunct FOX TV series, The OC.

Trishanne (Shannon Lucio) strikes up a conversation with Theodore Bagwell (Robert Knepper) in PRISON BREAK.

You know that if he wasn’t wearing a suit and surrounded by a bunch of corporate stiffs, T-Bag would totally hit that. But hopefully not stab it, like what he’s done with his other women throughout the Prison Break series. That's all.

Shannon Lucio in PRISON BREAK. Cot damn.

Promotional ad for Season 2 of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES... Tonight is the Season 2 premiere of the hit FOX TV series. Lena Headey reprises her role as the title character, Thomas Dekker returns as John Connor, Summer Glau is back as the cyborg heroine Cameron, Richard T. Jones once again plays FBI agent James Ellison, Garret Dillahunt is the evil Terminator known as Cromartie, and Megan Fox’s beau, Brian Austin Green, is back as Kyle Reese’s brother, Derek. Did I also mention Summer Glau is back as Cameron?

Another promotional ad for Season 2 of TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

The Sarah Connor Chronicles airs at 8 PM, before Prison Break. Speaking of Prison Break, Season 4 started off on a promising note last week. I thought this season was gonna focus on Michael Scofield getting revenge for the alleged death of Sara Tancredi...which would’ve been interesting but something not worth watching for an entire season. But seeing as this was resolved in the first 30 minutes of the 2-hour premiere (Sara’s alive!!), it’s nice to see what the main story will focus on. The fact that all the convicts have to team up to bring The Company down is intriguing...but you know there will be twists and turns during the season where some of the convicts won’t stay loyal, or not survive. We’ll see.

Michael Scofield and Sara Tancredi share a moment during last week's 2-hour season premiere of PRISON BREAK.

Back to The Sarah Connor Chronicles... Cameron is like Wolverine. What with her having a metal skeleton like the X-Men hero (though Wolverine is still human), and apparently healing quickly after last season’s explosive finale. And she’s looking gorgeous as usual.

PRISON BREAK... Tonight is the 2-hour Season 4 premiere of the hit FOX TV show. Wow, four seasons... Anyways, thanks for spoiling the Sara Tancredi plotline with this pic, people! Just kidding. I knew she was coming back. Though most of you probably didn’t. Sorry ‘bout that.

Prison Break airs at 9 PM on Mondays, starting next week.

HELL’S KITCHEN... Tonight is the season finale of the FOX reality TV show, and unlike the previous seasons, there’s really no one to root for. Most of the contestants have actually been somewhat mediocre this season, including the two finalists, Louis Petrozza and Christina Machamer. Petrozza doesn’t know how to keep his cooking station clean (which definitely goes against Chef Gordon Ramsay’s rule of always keeping your kitchen in mint condition), and how hard is it for Christina to friggin’ move a pan’s handle away from the stove burner? (Causing the head chef to burn his hands twice grabbing the handle during a single dinner service? Not a good thing...) Where are Heather and Rock when you need ‘em? Oh right— In Vegas. Haha.

HELL'S KITCHEN Season 4 finalists, Christina and Petrozza.

UPDATE (July 9): Christina won last night in Hell's Kitchen. Good for her.

FOX has begun showing promos for the next season of Prison Break and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, which return this Fall. This time around, Michael Scofield is out for revenge, and here’s hoping Summer Glau’s beautiful visage isn’t too scarred from that car bomb explosion in last season’s cliffhanger finale. That’s all.

Summer Glau in TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES.

Tuesday, March 04, 2008

Not a production still from THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES, but Summer Glau sure is gorgeous.

TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES... "CAMERON— NOOOOOO!!!!" Okay, that was a bit dramatic...but if you watched last night’s two-hour season (NOT series) finale of the FOX TV show, you would know that I was talking about that final scene (in the second episode) where a bomb went off in the jeep that Cameron was gonna use to go and buy a birthday cake for John Connor. Of course, overlooking the fact her beautiful, fake visage was probably burnt beyond repair (yea right...as if it’s gonna be a while before we see Summer Glau’s perfect face again), Cameron most likely survived that blast. Of course, unless FOX does the right thing and renews this show for season #2, we’ll never know for sure. And we won’t know what FBI agent James Ellison will do now that he just witnessed a Terminator in action (that underwater POV shot of the FBI officers falling lifelessly into that swimming pool was intense!), and almost died because of it. Please FOX, renew this show. Oh, and bring back Prison Break. Sucre needs to get out of Sona and reunite with Maricruz, and Michael Scofield needs to whup Gretchen’s ass for what she did to Sara Tancredi.

One last note... Do you think Megan Fox ‘congratulated’ Brian Austin Green for his exceptional performance in TERMINATOR: TSCC? Probably. Lucky bastard.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!! Time for that annual journal entry where I bring up dates to events that pretty much only interest me. And maybe some of you guys, haha. Keep in mind that a lot of the events mentioned below may not take place on the dates I listed. For example, the release dates for movies mentioned may move up or be pushed back unexpectedly. That, and this year’s batch of space shuttle missions may be delayed...which will most likely be the case since Atlantis will not launch on January 9 as listed at the top of this page, because of crappy issues pertaining to its external fuel tank. Anyways, that’s all. Go Trojans! Defeat the Fighting Illini today...

PRISON BREAK Season 3 group photo.

PRISON BREAK... Season 3 of the hit TV series premieres tonight (and NO, I wasn’t paid by FOX to write this entry. I wish it did). The premise for this season involves Michael Scofield trying to find a way to escape a Panama prison known as Sona after being wrongly incarcerated last season. His brother Lincoln Burrows, who Scofield sought to free from an American prison in Season 1 and was finally exonerated from death row last season, now has to rescue his brother as well as Lincoln’s son LJ and Scofield’s love interest, Sara Tancredi. And while the conspiracy involving U.S. President Caroline Reynolds and The Company is over, The Company had a little role in getting Scofield sent to Sona, as well as having him escape from it...along with a mysterious inmate known as Whistler.

Can't wait. Here lies the dilemma, though: Since I work during the evenings and don’t have TiVo, should I continue to make Mondays my unofficial day-off to watch primetime, um, FOX televsion (I was 'available' to work on Mondays during the weeks after the reality TV show Hell's Kitchen, which I also watch, ended), or should I risk missing an episode of Prison Break in case I get scheduled for Lunes (I actually had to do research on that one since I don’t speak Español, haha)? I could make up for this by working during the weekends (which I haven’t done for the past few weeks), but for reasons pertaining to the girl I talked about in this Blog, I prefer not to. Should I risk missing suspenseful episodes of Break by working on Lunes/Mondays/whatever? Or should I risk feeling, not to sound like a sensitive little prude or anything, heartache coming home after working a shift with Susie on the weekends (she has school and is only available to work on Saturdays and Sundays. And maybe Fridays)? Obviously, I can make up for missing episodes by buying Season 3 on DVD next summer, but that’s next summer! Heartache, summer, heartache, summer... Can’t decide.

...

Meh. I’ll take day-offs on Mondays. And the weekends. Money-wise, I’ll be so screwed come the holiday season, haha. That’s three months from now. Crap.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!! Hope all of you are having a safe and fun holiday. Just like what I did for 2006, I’ve posted a list below of key dates and events that should be of interest this year...that is, if you’re a sports fan or a movie buff. Or a space geek for that matter, haha. I’d add more dates in, but who really cares about when a parliamentary election takes place in Finland (March 18)? Or when the Manchester International Festival begins (June 28)? I don’t, hahaha. Anyways, carry on...
