Photos of the Day: L.A.'s Newest Bridge...

Happy New Year's Eve, everyone! Just thought I'd end 2022 by sharing these images that I shot of Los Angeles' newest bridge, the Sixth Street Viaduct, a few months ago.

The Sixth Street Viaduct, which opened to the public last summer, is a replacement for the Sixth Street Bridge that opened in 1932 and was demolished in 2016. The newest roadway opened on July 9.

I took these photos with my Google Pixel 4A smartphone on September 11, when I was working at a Los Angeles locale that was right next to this architectural beauty. I don't know when's the next time I'll visit this viaduct, so I figured I'll drive through it on the way home that day.

As shown at the bottom of this entry, I also shot a brief clip as I cruised along the Sixth Street Bridge...and decided to turn it into a short video that I edited through Lightworks, with music courtesy of YouTube's audio library.

Hey— I don't know when's the next time I'll shoot an actual short film like The Broken Table, and piece it together on my laptop, so I should might as well use this opportunity to keep my video editing skills from getting rusty!

Video of the Day: THE BROKEN TABLE - RED CUT Edition...

Happy Friday, everyone! Just thought I'd share this latest and hopefully final version of my short film, The Broken Table. The reason why I decided to create another iteration (using the Lightworks editing program) is because this is officially my cut of the film. The version of The Broken Table that was released in early May is based on input by a couple of folks who donated to the project's Kickstarter campaign last year. Seeing as how they contributed hard-earned money to my film, I obviously couldn't ignore the suggestions that they had for The Broken Table while it was still in postproduction a year ago.

With this Red Cut edition, I pretty much included everything that I had in mind even before I started shooting the film last fall. If you watch the official version and this cut, you'll see that two of the three music tracks are different...with the entire music score for The Broken Table now attributed solely to talented composer Sir Cubworth. The end credits have been upgraded to a red font, because I wanted the film to feel sinister through the very end. And I also added a heartbeat sound effect—which was inspired by last year's The Shining sequel Doctor Sleep—to three different moments in The Broken Table.

I figure that The Broken Table will be completely done with by the time New Year's Day rolls around. It was fun working on this project, and I look forward to whatever cinematic endeavor awaits me in the future. Check out The Broken Table: Red Cut on Vimeo below! And have a great weekend.

Video of the Day: THE CARD - My Short Film!

Happy Thursday, everyone! Just thought I'd post my newest project that I worked on after completing Envious last month, which is my other short film The Card! I shot this project back in 2002 (during my spring semester at Cal State Long Beach)—using a Super 8mm camera provided by my school's film department. Unlike Envious, I didn't have a sound mixer and boom operator to work with me on set...meaning that I had to create the audio track (and record dialogue) entirely in postproduction. That was pretty interesting!

I used Final Cut Pro to edit The Card 18 years ago, but utilized Lightworks on the Apple MacBook that my brother got me for my birthday last month to update it. Unlike Envious, I didn't have a version of The Card without its music track—so it was tricky retaining sound effects and the dialogue while also removing the songs that were featured in the original film (these songs being hip-hop jams by Dr. Dre, Warren G., Ashanti, K-Ci & JoJo and Usher). I would have kept the songs if YouTube didn't slap a copyright claim on videos that use trademarked music...but it's all good.

Anyways, here's The Card as presented on YouTube. (You can also view it on Vimeo.) Why did I choose today as the film's release date, you ask? Because tonight is the 2-hour series finale for the hit TV show Supernatural, which I've been watching since it premiered on the CW Network back in 2005! Carry on. (FYI, that's the episode title for tonight's finale.)

Video of the Day: ENVIOUS - The Short Film!

Happy Halloween, everyone!! Just thought I'd end this month by sharing my short film Envious...which I shot over 16 years ago and finally got around to completing thanks to this pandemic. Me being able to finish postproduction on this project is thanks to the Apple MacBook that one of my brothers bought me for my birthday three weeks ago. All of the media files for Envious were saved on an external hard drive that's formatted for a Mac (since I initially edited this film on a Mac G5 computer back during college in 2004), which I couldn't access because every computer I owned after that was a PC. Thanks to the MacBook, I was able to put finishing touches on Envious that took about three weeks to accomplish. It was only the sound design that wasn't completed yet.

Anyways, that's enough backstory for my senior thesis film from Cal State Long Beach! Here is Envious on Vimeo for your viewing pleasure—while it can be watched on YouTube as well. Depending on how I feel next week (due to this Tuesday being...Election Day), I might be in the mood to begin working on another project that I initally shot in film school too. I'll provide details about this in the near future. With that being said, enjoy Envious! And have a great and spooky weekend. Though in terms of politics, next week will definitely be scary as hell! On This Day in 2019: THE BROKEN TABLE Is Successfully Funded!

So today marks one year since my short film The Broken Table was successfully funded on Kickstarter! Much props to the 49 amazing backers who made my project become a reality... THE BROKEN TABLE Is Now Available Online for Viewing!

Happy Friday, everyone! Just thought I'd share the Vimeo version of my short film The Broken Table...which was officially released online last Tuesday! I've also created the new poster above and incorporated the release date on it. For those of you who take the time to view my project here, hope you like it! I'm proud of the amazing work that my cast and crew did on it during the 3-day production (on October 26, November 2 and 3) last year. Carry on!

Luke & Max Geissbuhler VIDEO OF THE DAY... Check out this awesome footage taken by a video camera that was attached to a weather balloon sent up into the sky by 7-year-old Max Geissbuhler and his father Luke. The balloon didn’t technically reach space—it flew 19 miles above the ground as opposed to 62 miles (designated as the Kármán line...a.k.a. the ‘official’ boundary between the Earth’s atmosphere and outer space). Click here for more details on this 'homemade spacecraft'. For those of you who have iPhones and some free time on your hands, you should try this too. I only have a measly Verizon LG phone.
