On This Day in 1993: Agents Mulder and Scully Begin Searching for the Truth That's Out There...

THE X-FILES made its debut on television 30 years ago...on September 10, 1993.

It was 30 years ago today that The X-Files made its debut on television! I was just starting 8th grade when the sci-fi mystery drama by Chris Carter (a fellow alumnus at my college, Cal State Long Beach) began airing on FOX TV, and was about to complete my fourth year in college when the original 9-season run of The X-Files ended on May 19, 2002.

I watched the first X-Files movie that was shown in theaters back in 1998, but never saw the sequel, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, in 2008. (Based on the Rotten Tomatoes reviews for this film, I didn't miss out on anything!)

And of course, I watched FBI agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny, who I saw on set when I worked as a background actor on an episode of his SHOWTIME series Californication in Culver City 10 years ago) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) make their return to television for Seasons 10 and 11 of The X-Files between January 2016 and March 2018, respectively.

The X-Files inspired other sci-fi and paranormal TV shows like Fringe and Supernatural over the last two decades—with Supernatural itself employing the monster-of-the-week and mythology episode format during its 15-season run, just like what the Chris Carter series did.

The 1996 hit alien invasion flick Independence Day also paid its respects to The X-Files...though Chris Carter's homage to that summer blockbuster with the '98 X-Files movie (where in one scene, Mulder is seen outside a bar urinating on the poster for Independence Day that's hanging to the side of the building) isn't exactly something that ID4 filmmakers Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin would find flattering!

The X-Files will always be one of my favorite television programs...along with shows like 24, Prison Break, Supernatural and The Big Bang Theory (which of course, isn't a serialized drama).

Would I watch Season 12 of The X-Files if FOX ever decided to give this trailblazing series one more year? You betcha!

And as a reminder: The truth is out there. Happy Sunday!

Designated Survivor...

The main cast of DESIGNATED SURVIVOR.

Just thought I'd end this month by raving about my favorite new TV drama, Designated Survivor. After so many years of saving U.S. presidents by breaking arms and shooting bad guys as Jack Bauer, Kiefer Sutherland is now saving America by being the POTUS himself. It's intriguing to watch Sutherland play President Tom Kirkman with the sort of dignity and charisma that will be missing from the real White House come January 20, 2017 (yes, I went there)...depicting a character that is the complete opposite of what Sutherland portrayed for nine seasons on FOX's 24 (this includes the 2014 mini-series 24: Live Another Day). Instead of solving political problems through brute strength, firearms and fury, Kirkman solves issues through diplomatic prowess and strong leadership... qualities that people underestimated in him early on in this season.

Designated Survivor has such a great cast surrounding Sutherland—with Natascha McElhone (who was previously on Showtime's Californication) as his wife Alex, Adan Canto as his chief of staff Aaron Shore, Italia Ricci (who was great as the villainous Silver Banshee on the former-CBS/now-The CW TV series Supergirl) as White House consultant Emily Rhodes, LaMonica Garrett as Secret Service agent Mike Ritter, Maggie Q as FBI agent Hannah Wells, Malik Yoba as FBI director Jason Atwood, Virginia Madsen as congresswoman Kimble Hookstraten (I just realized how weird that name sounds) and Kal Penn (who actually worked for President Obama in the White House) as press secretary Seth Wright. And let's not forget the main villain himself (spoiler alert): congressman Peter MacLeish, played by Ashley Zukerman, who looks like he could be the twin brother of either Jake Gyllenhaal or The Office's B.J. Novak.

With the winter finale airing next Wednesday (December 7), I can't wait to see how Designated Survivor will end in a mid-season cliffhanger. Will Peter MacLeish finally become vice president? Will Hannah Wells finally find herself in mortal danger (I'm glad she made it through tonight's episode in one piece...what with that guy in the car watching her snoop on Jason Atwood and that MacLeish conspirator on the rooftop)? Will there be another controversy unfold for the Kirkman family even after the mystery surrounding Leo's (Tanner Buchanan) biological father was resolved? (Spoiler alert: It's President Kirkman.) And just who is that whistleblower shown in the sneak preview for next week's finale? We shall see.

It's the awesome suspense in Designated Survivor, that—like 24 before it—makes me take Wednesdays off from work just to see how ABC's hit political drama continues to unfold. Along with Sutherland, fellow 24 alumnus Sean Callery also returned to compose Survivor's music score. (Kal Penn played a regular character in 'Day 6' of 24 ten years ago.) And like 24, Designated Survivor is compelling because it deals with timely issues that affect our country right now. Whereas 24's focus on terrorism was potent considering that it made its debut on television around the same time as the September 11 attacks in 2001, Designated Survivor's focus on a man who's learning the ropes after having the U.S. presidency thrust upon him applies to real life as well.

I'm not gonna fully elaborate on that last sentence above (otherwise, this entry will have six more paragraphs), but the man who most of America (unfortunately) voted for as president on November 8 showed numerous signs that he doesn't really want to be Commander In Chief. If footage of his meeting with President Obama two days after election night is any indication, Donald Trump is overwhelmed and stunned at the fact that he will (unfortunately) lead this country for the next four years. (Unless a miracle happens and he eventually emulates Richard Nixon...) It's sad that I myself watch Designated Survivor for the personal comfort of seeing a fictional president do a better job in the Oval Office than what the real president-elect will do come next January. Am I underestimating Trump? All signs points to no. If only Tom Kirkman were a real person, hah. But enough of the dreary real-world comparisons between actual American politics and a successful TV show... Designated Survivor is awesome. I can't wait to see what next week's episode, the second half of this season (and subsequent seasons, hopefully) will hold for this series. Hail to the Chief! That chief being President Kirkman, that is. Carry on.

Photos of the Day: The '24: Live Another Day' Q&A Screening...

Kiefer Sutherland and Mary Lynn Rajskub attend a special screening of 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY at Landmark Theatres in west Los Angeles...on June 11, 2015.

Last Thursday, I drove down to the Landmark Theatres in west Los Angeles to attend a special screening of the hit FOX TV show 24: Live Another Day. After the screening ended, there was a Q&A session featuring the show's two main stars, Kiefer Sutherland (who played Jack Bauer) and Mary Lynn Rajskub (who portrayed Chloe O'Brian)! They obviously talked about what it was like to work on Live Another Day as well as the show's eight previous seasons (though Rajskub joined the show in 'Day 3'). The bombshell that was dropped during the Q&A, however, was that Sutherland doesn't intend to return as Jack Bauer should there be another season (or a spin-off series)...except maybe for a cameo. To quote Kiefer, "There are only so many bad days a guy can have" without it "turning into a Mad comic." That's unfortunate to hear, but it's all good. I'm just glad that I had the opportunity to see the ass-kicking Jack Bauer and his trusty sidekick Chloe in person! Carry on.

Jack Bauer Lives Another Day...But At Great Cost

24 logo.

So last night was the season finale for 24: Live Another Day...and all I can say is, if this is the permanent finale for the hit FOX TV series, then this show ended on a great note! A very sad and bleak note, but a great note nonetheless. Jack Bauer once again proved why he's one of the greatest action heroes to grace the small screen, and Kiefer Sutherland displayed that he was up to the task of bringing this character back to life after a four-year absence from television. Not to be outdone by Sutherland was Mary Lynn Rajskub as Chloe O'Brian—who showed that she will always be Jack's best friend and trusty sidekick whenever a terrorist comes along to make the proverbial crap hit the fan.

Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) ponders his next move after defeating Cheng Zhi and averting a world war in the finale of 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY.

In regards to the finale, this episode was completely emotional and action-packed. The fact that there were two silent clocks (one for the death of Audrey, Jack's one true live and the daughter of President James Heller, and the other to mark Bauer's uncertain fate at the hands of the Russians) showed that the producers were gonna have 24: Live Another Day punch TV viewers in the gut (in a good way) before the end credits came rolling. To see the anguish on CIA agent Kate Morgan's (played by the ever talented and beautiful Yvonne Strahovski) face as Audrey (portrayed with grace by Kim Raver) lay dying in her arms after being shot by a second Chinese sniper (the first one was eliminated by Agent Morgan) was devastating to say the least. But it was even more heartbreaking to see the initial responses by Jack and President Heller (played superbly by William Devane) when they got word that Heller's daughter was no more. Heller's collapse to the floor upon hearing the news about Audrey's death, and subsequent confession to the British Prime Minister on an airport tarmac (while Audrey's casket was being loaded aboard Air Force One) that Heller won't remember his daughter's horrific fate, let alone that he had a daughter at all due to Alzheimer's, was the kind of performance that should earn Devane an Emmy nomination next year. As for Jack...

President James Heller (William Devane) is about to receive devastating news regarding his daughter Audrey in the finale of 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY.

If Kiefer Sutherland gets an Emmy nomination for Live Another Day next year, it will be for the reaction he conveyed upon Jack getting a phone call by Agent Morgan about Audrey being fatally wounded. Jack initially takes out his handgun and ponders doing what he probably thought about doing on the previous 8 'days'—ending his life—but quickly places the firearm back into its holster when Bauer realizes that he has one last job to do as he was about to save the world from disaster once more. The following events proved an adage that's been shown numerous times before in the other seasons: When Jack Bauer is pissed off, he's really pissed off...and you don't mess with him at all. Particularly, you don't mess with Jack when he's welding a Samurai sword. Cheng Zhi (played with sinister relish by Tzi Ma) learned this the hard way when he was the one responsible for Audrey's death and the next world war that would've begun between America and China had Bauer not located him in time. Considering all of the brutal things he did (not just to Audrey but to a couple of Chloe O'Brian's friends) in the few episodes he was in during this season, it was definitely a well-earned payoff to see Bauer dispatch (Re: decapitate) Cheng with that sword. But even though Jack achieved justice for Audrey and the other people who suffered at the hands of Cheng in the final moments of this season, there was more justice to be had in the world of 24; unfortunately, it would be at Jack's expense.

Cheng Zhi (Tzi Ma) is about to meet his fate by way of a Samurai sword welded by Jack Bauer in the 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY finale.

Jack's ability to save the world on nine different days was not without cost: He had to take the lives of colleagues who stood in the way of a crisis being averted, he lost many people (along with Audrey) that he loved, and his anger in wanting to take out the bad guy resulted in him eliminating foreign dignitaries that would cause those nations to seek vengeance on him (which is how Bauer met Cheng Zhi in the first place). One such nation is Russia...who would use Jack's friendship with Chloe O'Brian as a way to force him to surrender himself to the Russians and atone for the acts that he committed against their country in Day 8. Like the previous seasons of 24, there was no way that Jack Bauer was gonna have a happy ending, and to see him say his goodbye to Chloe just as Jack was about to board that Russian helicopter to Moscow (to be interrogated, tortured and incarcerated, no doubt) was fitting for a hero who saved the world so many times and suffered so much while doing it. If this season of 24 is indeed the final time that we'll see Jack Bauer thwart terrorists on the TV screen, then this ending was the right way to conclude it. As mentioned in the second paragraph of this entry, there was a silent clock to mark Jack's fate and the conclusion of Live Another Day. There's no better way to accentuate the ultimate sacrifice that Bauer made in this 12-part series...but here's hoping that there will also be a way to celebrate his ultimate victories if 24 gets another season. Jack deserves as much. Carry on.

Jack Bauer and Chloe O'Brian (Mary Lynn Rajskub) bid farewell to each other, prior to Jack boarding a Russian helicopter and heading to an uncertain fate in the 24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY finale.

It's Finally Here!

24 logo.

Don't forget to catch the two-hour premiere of 24: Live Another Day on FOX tonight! For those of y'all on the West Coast, it starts at 8 PM, Pacific Time. All I can say is, I'm gonna get goosebumps when the logo above once again appears on the TV screen at the start of the first episode... Carry on.

Them's fightin' words, Jack!

24: Live Another Day...

Only one month from today! Jack Bauer and his trusty (ex-)Counter Terrorist Unit colleague Chloe O'Brian return to FOX in the highly-anticipated mini-series...which makes its television premiere on May 5. All I can say is, Chloe's death stare in the photo below looks just as lethal as the Glock that Jack is holding. I'm totally taking Mondays off from work to see terrorists once again getting their (fatal) comeuppance at the hands of Bauer. And word is that 24: Live Another Day, depending on how it does on TV this summer, may even get a Season 2 next year. Let's all hope so!

Sleepy Hollow...

Posing with SLEEPY HOLLOW's Katia Winter at the Los Angeles Shrine Auditorium, on February 9, 2014.

Earlier today, I went to a sci-fi and comic book convention at L.A.'s Shrine Auditorium to attend an autograph signing by Katia Winter...who plays Katrina Crane on the hit FOX TV show Sleepy Hollow. The last time I went to this convention was a little over six years ago—when Summer Glau and her fellow cast members showed up to promote FOX's Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (which opened to huge ratings but would only live on to see a total of two seasons on television). The cast of the latest Power Rangers series (not the one that I blogged about last December) was also on-hand to meet fans at Shrine this afternoon, but I only cared about meeting Ms. Winter. Lookin' forward to seeing Sleepy Hollow return this fall! In the meantime, I'll just have to make do with those other awesome FOX shows The Following, Almost Human and—holy cow, I CAN'T WAIT—this May's triumphant return of Jack Bauer in 24: Live Another Day. Carry on.

Jack Bauer Is Coming Back!

24 logo.

But don't take my word for it... Check out this cool banner that is currently the cover photo for 24's Facebook page. Now the big question is: Will I be financially irresponsible like I was in 2010 (when the hit FOX show's final season, Day 8, aired) and not work on the nights the episodes are shown on TV? I have less than four months to think about that—though I think we all know what my decision will end up being...

24: LIVE ANOTHER DAY premieres on FOX on May 5.

Tuesday, May 14, 2013

24 logo.

Jack Bauer is coming back... At least for a 12-hour special (titled 24: Live Another Day) on FOX next spring! It's too bad 'The Jack Bauer Power Hour' will apparently air after the second season of The Following would presumably come to an end in early 2014; I wouldn't mind taking work off (again) just to see Jack Bauer and Ryan Hardy pull an um, Jack Bauer on terrorists and cult members alike during the same night on Rupert Murdoch's network. It's all good.

Jack Bauer sought retribution in the 2-hour series finale of '24'...aired on May 24, 2010.

The main cast of THE FOLLOWING.

The Following... Such an awesome TV show. It looks like FOX finally found a worthy replacement for 24 (which ended in 2010) with this new drama—which focuses on a formerly-retired FBI agent (Ryan Hardy, played by Kevin Bacon) who goes after a group of cult members that an imprisoned serial killer (Joe Carroll, played by James Purefoy) unleashes on the public as a way of getting revenge on the agent, who arrested the killer and once slept with his wife. Just like Kiefer Sutherland as 24's Jack Bauer, Bacon is a bad-ass as Hardy. Case-in-point: For those of you who saw yesterday's episode ("The Fall"), Hardy would've totally pwned (to borrow Internet message board parlance) those three cult members had the girl (Emma Hill, played by Valorie Curry) not been equipped with that stun gun...courtesy of Joe Carroll. Of course, Hardy does pwn—okay, own—two of the lackeys once he frees his hands of that rope. Like the terrorists in 24, the bad guys in The Following are so intensely sinister that one can't help but wait for Hardy to show up on scene and end their murderous rampage with a bullet to the chest. However, Carroll is so resourceful that Hardy is not just going up against average Joes and plain Janes who are carrying out the author-turned-killer's bidding...but police officers, former soldiers and SWAT team members who'll be ready to strike once they get the word from Carroll (through coded televised messages via Carroll's hapless lawyer).

Valorie Curry and Nico Tortorella play two cult followers in THE FOLLOWING.

If there's one gripe I have about The Following, it's the numerous flashback scenes in each episode. I understand that they're needed to show the relationship between Hardy and Carroll before they became mortal enemies, and to explain the events that led people like Emma to want to fall under Carroll's stewardship. But the main highlight of each episode is when Hardy appears on scene—ready to hand out justice to these homicidal followers. Considering the high-concept premise of this show, one wonders if The Following will get at least a second season and at most a fourth (just like Prison Break) on FOX. Of course, how many people thought that Jack Bauer would endure 8 separate days (as in 8 seasons) saving the world within each of those 24 hours? Just like Bauer, don't underestimate Agent Hardy. And definitely don't underestimate Joe Carroll. Looking forward to next Monday's episode.

(PS: And no, I wasn't paid to blog about this show. Would've been cool if I was, though. Hah.)

Wearing an Edgar Allan Poe mask, a cult follower puts on a show before wreaking murderous havoc in THE FOLLOWING.

A socialite (Odette Annable) is peeved that Sam Witwicky hit her car in 2007's TRANSFORMERS.

Transformers update... Okay, this isn't really an update, assuming that you've already heard that Michael Bay is back to direct a fourth Transformers flick...and that it will feature a new cast but will continue the storyline established by the first three movies. Anyways, I just found out on the Web yesterday that the cute brunette who gets her face um, hugged by the Steering Wheel Bot in the first Transformers film is none other than Odette Yustman—err, Annable. You'll remember her from Cloverfield and maybe the horror flick The Unborn, and her stint in this year's final season of the hit FOX TV show House. If you've visited my Blog long enough, you'll also know that I devoted a journal entry to her a few years back, haha.

I'll resist the urge to point out that Mrs. Annable should've been in Transformers: Dark of the Moon [FYI, Michael Bay cast actor Glenn Morshower (who played a Secret Service agent on the other hit-but-defunct FOX TV show, 24) in Revenge of the Fallen and Dark of the Moon, despite the fact Morshower already played a character who died at the beginning of the first movie] instead of the hot Victoria's Secret model who was out of Shia LaBeouf's league. Then again... Carly in the original Transformers cartoons is blonde, so unless Mrs. Annable dyed her hair that color, she obviously wouldn't have fit that role. That, and Megan Fox probably would've been peeved that another brunette was moving in on her dorky on-set squeeze. Hey, at least Bay found a way to get another sexy Hollywood girl in his movies. That's probably one of the main reasons why I'm glad that he's directing Transformers 4. (Okay, maybe not.) And that's why it just occurred to me that Annable can always be cast in this next film, which is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2014. Duh.

The socialite gets her comeuppance when Steering Wheel Bot attacks her in TRANSFORMERS.

THE DAY IS OVER... Tonight was the 2-hour series finale of 24, and I would have to say that that was an awesome (and honorable) ending for Day 8 of the hit FOX TV show. I’m glad that President Taylor finally came to her senses...though it’s clear that Charles Logan has 9 lives! This will probably be the second time he came back from an um, life-threatening injury and survive (the first injury being that near-Colombian necktie by his ex-wife Martha Logan in Day 6). If there is indeed a feature film in the works, Logan should be in it—and be in it with a vengeance (though that may be a bit unlikely if he's brain damaged, haha)! No doubt if he was obviously okay, Logan would collaborate with the Russians once more to hunt down and eliminate Jack Bauer, who must totally be used to being a fugitive by now...

Jack Bauer seeks retribution in the 2-hour series finale of '24'.

I'm sad to see 24 go, but also glad. I wonder how much income I would've earned over the past 5 years (when I started watching Day 4) if I didn't take Monday nights off from work to see Jack save the country without taking lunch breaks? Did he even eat at all in Day 8? With Bauer pulling a Dirty Harry/Paul Kersey (a.k.a. Charles Bronson in the Death Wish movies... Yes, I know that Paul Kersey is the fictional character here) on all of those Russians in the last couple of episodes, probably not. Anyways... Bring on 24: The Movie!

Former President Charles Logan tries to repair his tarnished reputation at the expense of President Taylor in the 2-hour series finale of '24'.

Chloe O'Brian, Arlo Glass and Cole Ortiz view video footage of Jack Bauer just as he is about to go into hiding at the end of the 2-hour series finale of '24'.

Sam, Dean and Bobby confront the Apocalypse in SUPERNATURAL.

SUPERNATURAL... Castiel got Rorschached! Wait, he didn't? Awesome. If you watched the movie Watchmen or read its original graphic novel, then you'd know what I'm talking about. Anyways... I'm lookin' forward to Season 6 later this year—even though Supernatural was intended to only be a 5-season TV series (like 24, originally). We'll see what the producers have in store for the Winchester brothers next fall.

THE DAY IS AT AN END... I just found out that FOX is gonna cancel 24 after this season (Season 8...or Day 8) ends. On one hand, I’m sad to see this show go. On the other hand, I’m relieved...since I’ve been taking Monday nights off from work for the past 5 years to watch Jack Bauer kick terrorist ass. I wonder how much money I would’ve made if I worked Monday evenings between mid-January and late May since Day 4 aired (in 2005)? Hmmm.

Anyways, I’ve read online that a feature film for 24 may be in the works. That would be awesome. Of course, that kinda spoils the finale to this season in that it would clearly mean that Bauer doesn’t bite the dust at the end of the day. That's obviously good news...unless the movie is gonna be a prequel. And before you ask (not that I’d hear the question), I DO think this season is going pretty well so far. It started off slowly, but the episodes are becoming more intense. Go Jack!

Jack Bauer will be saving the world for his 8th and last time on TV.

DAY 8 IS HERE... Just thought I’d remind y’all that the premiere to the eighth season of the hit TV show begins today at 9 PM on FOX. Much like the past four seasons of 24, there will be two episodes airing tonight and two more episodes airing tomorrow (starting at 8 PM) for the premiere. I’d say more, but I’m currently watching the special features on The Hurt Locker DVD (which I bought last Thursday) while I’m typing this. That's an awesome movie... I hope it wins the Oscar for Best Picture this March. Later.

Space shuttle DISCOVERY lands at Edwards Air Force Base in California.

HAPPY NEW YEAR, EVERYONE!!! First of all, just thought I’d mention that 2010 marks 10 years since I created this Blog and my official website. I don’t know the exact day or month I set up Parman’s Page (it might've been this month), but I do know that it will be a decade since I started this journal on October 24 (as you can tell if you check my Archives section to the right). Nice... So how will I be celebrating this milestone about 10 months from now, you ask? Probably by writing a journal entry about Transformers 3 (since it should be starting production this year if Michael Bay is still aiming for a July 2011 theatrical release. Yes, I am looking forward to another 'Bayformers' flick) or the space program.

Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man in IRON MAN 2.

Speaking of the space program... This year will be a very historic year for NASA as it prepares to fly the last 5 shuttle flights to the International Space Station (ISS). The final mission of the shuttle program is targeted for launch on September 16, with the orbiter Discovery on STS-133. Of course, all this could change if President Obama raises NASA’s budget for 2011...thus allowing one more flight to be conducted after STS-133 to the ISS (assuming STS-133 launches on time). On non-space-related notes, Iron Man 2 comes out in theaters on May 7, The Hurt Locker will presumably have a gripload of Oscar nominations—including that for Best Picture—when the Academy Awards are broadcast on TV this March 7, and Kobe and the L.A. Lakers will hopefully repeat and start another decade as NBA champions this June. Hopefully. That is all.
