The 2016 Miramar Air Show...
Last Saturday, I drove 108 miles to San Diego to check out the Miramar Air Show. Located at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near the 15 Freeway, this occasion (if my memory serves me well) marks the second air show that I attended in almost 16 years...the last one being at Edwards Air Force Base in October of 2000 (though that event was technically called an open house). I went to Miramar to see the V-22 Osprey on display and the F-35B Lightning II in action during an air demo—but was pleasantly surprised to see that another F-35B was parked on the tarmac near the V-22 for people to see up-close and personal. And of course, the Blue Angels were on-hand to do their usual awesome acrobatics as I walked back to my car to head home.
So would I attend the Miramar Air Show again, you ask? Most likely if the F-22 Raptor made an appearance. (The U.S. Air Force was represented at the show by an F-16 Fighting Falcon that put on a great aerial demo right before the F-35B flew, FYI.) I saw the F-22 in person at Edwards Air Force Base in 2000 (along with the B-2 Stealth Bomber)...but believe that it was the prototype that was put on display back then. I want to see a production model (one that might have flown over Syria over the past two years, preferably) parked on the tarmac alongside the Lightning II next time. Carry on!
