An artist's concept depicting the SPIRIT Mars Exploration Rover.
NASA JPL

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY, the first of the two Mars rovers, Spirit, successfully touched down on the Red Planet's surface. It, along with its twin sister Opportunity, are still up and running after lasting beyond their then-projected 90-day life spans. Cool.

An overhead image that SPIRIT took of itself. Today, its solar panels are almost completely covered by martian dust.
