Lorna Raver as Mrs. Ganush in DRAG ME TO HELL.
DRAG ME TO HELL... I saw Sam Raimi’s latest horror flick yesterday, and um, I’m wondering just what the heck the reviewers were thinking when this film got a 93% Fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com?? Could it be out of respect for Raimi and his Evil Dead trilogy? Possibly... But the film had its moments. Actually, it didn’t. The film was pretty cheesy—even moreso than Army of Darkness. But not in a good way.
Mrs. Ganush attacks Christine Brown (Alison Lohman) after Brown evicts Ganush from her house in DRAG ME TO HELL.
You know that Raimi wasn’t trying to go for a completely serious horror flick when he cast Justin Long (of Dodgeball, Zack & Miri Make a Porno and those Mac computer TV ads) in Drag Me to Hell. And when you have a scene in the movie where the main character (Christine Brown, played by Alison Lohman) literally drops an anvil atop the head of the antagonist (a vomit-spewing gypsy played by Lorna Raver), then you know that Raimi isn’t trying to create another Psycho [the original Hitchcock version...not that unnecessary remake (I know, I know... Aren't ALL remakes unnecessary??) starring Vince Vaughn and Anne Heche], or even The Ring. And the acting and dialogue (can’t think of specific lines from the top of my head, but a lot of the characters tended to state the obvious) in several scenes were pretty bad... Again, don’t know if Raimi did this on purpose. Most likely he did.
Mrs. Ganush continues to torment Christine Brown in DRAG ME TO HELL.
All in all, here’s hoping Raimi doesn’t try to make the next Spider-Man films (yes, he’s doing more) as campy as this one. It’s bad enough Peter Parker conveyed his, um, evilness after being infected by that alien symbiote in Spider-Man 3 by dancing like a douche on the street; we don’t need to hear him say something like "I beat you, you old bitch!" after defeating the main villain (Carnage, anyone?). Then again, that would be pretty cool. Makes him look like a bigger bad-ass than that emo hair he had in the last film. *Sigh.* Spider-Man 3 could’ve been so much better...
Christine Brown ends the curse that was bestowed upon her by Mrs. Ganush in DRAG ME TO HELL...or DID she?
